Ring sizes: how to measure the size of your ring?

If you have reached this page, you may have in mind to give, or give yourself, a ring. If you buy it at a classic jewelry store, in person, they will measure your finger right there. But... What if you buy it online, for example at MeriTomasa: how can you measure and know the size of your ring?

I have summarized it in this video, but please also read carefully the text that you will find below: in the video I only summarize the main tips, and in the text I tell you everything in more detail ❤️

Video by Núria Oliveras

The problem: if you choose wrong, you will have to bear the costs, in time and money. That is why it is very important that you take the time to correctly measure your ring size

Choosing the correct ring size is very important. Some designs allow the diameter of a ring to be made larger or smaller with some ease, although you will have to assume the hassle of sending the ring back and forth to the workshop and the costs of modifying it, especially when you buy a custom-made jewel like the ones I offer at The MeriTomasa's Treasures Factory. But you should keep in mind that there are also ring designs that are not easy to modify. For example, my Atlantis Rings are based on the golden ratio: the luxor wave and the pyramids occupy two fifths of the total. This implies that a modification of the diameter implies the realization of a new ring, so that in addition to the round trip costs you will have to assume a 10% surcharge of the new size plus the difference between both sizes (if applicable). That is why it is so important that before placing your order online you make sure you know your correct ring size.

Many times you will see it written as "Tatum measure". The Tatum measure is the ring size scale. There are different scales depending on the country in which you want to buy your ring: the United States and Canada use a scale; UK and other Commonwealth countries, another one; France other; Germany another; Spain another... At MeriTomasa I work with the Spanish Tatum measurement scale.

If you already know your measurement from another country, it is very easy: you can use this international size converter guide. You can choose the closest Spanish measure to make your purchase, and then tell me in comments your measure of your country or your measure in millimeters or inches, and I will elaborate your ring exactly in the measure that you indicate. And if you have any doubt... Just contact me!

But... what if you don't know your ring size?

First, keep these recommendations in mind:

  • Always measure the finger where you want to wear the ring. All fingers are different, including the same finger on the right or left hand .
  • The ring must fit the finger comfortably. Tight enough not to fall off, but loose enough to slide over the knuckle. If you hesitate between two sizes, choose the largest.
  • Measure yourself without being cold. The size of the fingers changes depending on the time of day and the weather. It is best to measure when your fingers are warm, but not too warm. Fingers expand in heat and shrink in cold. The fingers are smaller when they are cold, and larger in summer or when we have a warm hand. Therefore, it is better to be measured in intermediate conditions, not too cold or too hot, neither early in the morning nor at night.

...and in this post I explain 4 solutions to measure the size of your ring:

Option 1) If you already have a ring that suits you and you want another ring of the same size, the best solution is to measure it with a vernier caliper

Better with a vernier caliper
The best solution is to measure a ring that fits you well, but do it with a vernier caliper, not a ruler. And better with a good vernier caliper, which is digital.

If you already have a ring that works for you on the same finger where you want to buy a new ring online, instead of measuring your finger, you can measure that ring. There are several options to do so. From best to worst:

  1. The best option is to measure your ring yourself: never do it with a ruler or a meter: you need a vernier caliper, as in the picture above. It is important because the caliper will give us exactly the diameter of the ring, in millimeters and tenths of a millimeter. If you give me the exact measurement in millimeters and tenths of a millimeter of your ring, I no longer need a Tatum or any converter: I will make your ring exactly in that measure. If you don't have a vernier caliper at home, an easy option is to go to a hardware store and ask to have it measured there with a vernier caliper. Very important: always measure a round ring, never an oval or deformed ring, and it must be a straight ring on the inside, with sharp edges like the Atlantis Ring, that is not rounded or convex on the inside since that will bias the measurement.
  2. The second best option is to go to a jewelry store, or better two, or better three. There they can measure your ring with a rod to measure rings, and they can confirm the measurement with a ring sizer measuring your finger. In addition, they are professionals and will know how to advise you if you have any questions. My advice: ask them to measure your ring with a vernier caliper.
  3. The third best option is to measure your ring with a caliper.
  4. The fourth best option is to measure your ring with a caliper.
  5. The fifth best option is to use a ring size measurement guide. You can download mine in PDF: MeriTomasa Ring Size Gauge. Above all, it is very important to check that you print the PDF without altering its proportions: note that inside I indicate that the upper square must measure 3cm x 3cm: if you do not print it correctly, the resulting measurement will be incorrect and you will have to bear the costs if you want to change the size of your ring. I put this option as a the latest because many of my clients have used it and many times it gives problems: it is very inaccurate and it's easy for you to end up choosing your ring size wrong ... Better measure it with a caliper :) !

VERY IMPORTANT: Measure a ring... Don't measure your finger with the caliper!

I have received several requests from people who have had their finger measured. This is a mistake, because the finger is soft and a ring is rigid. A ring is round and the finger is not, and above all, you must keep in mind that this perfect circle must pass through the knuckle and sit well on the flesh. That is why you should never ever measure your finger with a piece of paper, or with a tape, thread, or, of course, directly from side to side with a caliper. You have to measure a ring that fits you well, not measure your finger.

VERY IMPORTANT: above all, make sure that the ring you take as a reference does not have a rounded interior (in some stores they call it a "comfort section"), because with that interior it is very difficult to take measure well, both with a vernier caliper and in any other way. In fact, there are also "comfort" ring sizers that generate the same error. Do not use sample rings or ring sizers with rounded insides:

Do not use sample rings or ring sizers with rounded insides

Option 2) What if you don't have a reference ring? How to measure your finger to know what your ring size is? The best trick is to go to a jewelry store in a department store, or two... or better three!

department store
The second best trick to know the size of your ring is to visit a jewelry store in a department store.

If you search on Google, you will find a lot of magic recipes to measure the size of your ring at home with a piece of dental floss, cords, threads, pieces of paper or rulers and a measuring tape,oOr with a mobile app.... I don't recommend it. They are successful methods, but it is very easy for the thread to stretch or shrink and you choose the wrong size, or for complex conversion calculations to make it easy for you to make a mistake. I have received orders for rings online for many years at The MeriTomasa's Treasures Factory and I know from experience that these "tricks" end up causing problems. Please don't use them.

The second best trick to measure the size of your finger to wear that ring you have your eye on is... go to a jewelry store. There they can measure it with a ring sizer.

Better in a department store: if you go to a local jewelry store, a jeweler will attend you and it may be bad for them to discover that you ask them your Tatum measurement to buy your ring online. That's why I recommend you go to a mall or department store. There you will be attended by a sales team who will be happy to spend a couple of minutes taking your measurement. If you prefer, you can always ask them about any of the jewels they offer and be interested in what its price would be in your case, so they should take the measurement to calculate it for you. Better ask for gold rings, such as wedding rings or similar, since the price of a gold ring depends entirely on the weight of the piece and therefore on your Tatum measurement.

You have to keep two tips in mind:

  • Generally the rings sizers have ring samples 3mm thick, and sometimes with rounded edges. You must take into account how is the ring you want to buy. For example, MeriTomasa's Atlantis Rings are 6mm thick and their edges are not rounded. A 3mm ring with rounded edges moves more easily on the finger than a 6mm ring without rounded edges, which will cost more to go through the knuckle and will create a greater sensation of pressure. Therefore, my recommendation would be to add half a size more to the measure that you get if you measure yourself with a reference of a 3mm ring.
  • That is precisely why I recommend you visit not one, but two jewelry stores. Or three. A ring is like shoes, or a t-shirt. Sometimes you go to a shoe store and one size suits you, and you change shoe store, or shoe brand, and that same size is too small for you. That is why it is good to compare the measurement in several jewelers, to be sure that you get to know your ring size correctly.

Option 3) What if I buy a ring sizer on Amazon and I measure myself at home?

ring sizer
Another option is to buy a ring sizer yourself, but make sure it is good and that you know how to use it.

It is a good idea, but it's better to go to the jewelry store: a professional is more used to measuring ring sizes and if you tell him that you want to buy a 6mm ring without rounded edges, for example, he will know how to better advise your size using his professional ring band.

However, if it is impossible for you to go to a jewelry store (because the impossible happens again, like a new pandemic, or because you live in the middle of the jungle and there are no jewelry stores there, or whatever...) then one option is buy a ring band online and measure yourself. Beware of Amazon! I have seen many rings sizers on Amazon with which I do not recommend measuring yourself, so if you want to measure yourself at home because there is no other option, do not buy it on Amazon: better at Cooks on Gold: I recommend that you buy a good ring band. For instance this one o even better this one.

To measure yourself, take into account the advice and recommendations in the previous section.

...and, above all, never use a "comfort" ring sizer, with the inside of the ring rounded, because it will give you an incorrect measurement.

If you have doubts while you measure yourself, take photos and send them to me by email and we will discuss it.

Option 4) If you live nearby, you can also come and get measured at my MeriTomasa jewelry store in Manresa (Barcelona)

Monday to Friday, from 5pm to 8pm, or at pre-arranged hours:

Until recently I couldn't say, because I only worked with my online store, through the Internet, but from the end of 2019 I have opened my first jewelry store in Manresa, very close to Barcelona. And, of course, I am at your disposal to measure your ring size .

I wait for you at my MeriTomasa jewelry store in Jaume d'Arters 11, Manresa (Barcelona). I open from Monday to Friday, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and at agreed hours.

At the MeriTomasa's Treasures Factory I create custom treasures for all tastes and budgets. Atlantis Ring Collection at The MeriTomasa's Treasures Factory

The main difference of my Atlantis Rings with respect to the serial productions that you can find on other websites is the quality and craftsmanship. I only work with noble metals (18K gold, sterling silver, and electrolytic copper). And I make each piece by hand. The result is a unique, quality ring. Stronger and more durable.

The Atlantis rings from The MeriTomasa's Treasures Factory share a same design, based on the golden ratio. The only thing that changes is the precious metal or metals with which I model each ring. This change is not trivial: it implies substantial differences in price since a gram of gold is much more expensive than a gram of silver. It also implies substantial differences depending on what you want to use your ring for.

You can buy online on my website:

mi marido y yo nos compramos unos anillos por dos euros en los chinos y los envié a la joyería de internet para que los midieran y tuvieran nuestras tallas. Lo hicimos así porque nos gustaban unas alianzas que habíamos visto en otra web: conste que hace muchos años y todavía no estaba MeriTomasa he he he

¡Buen truco Victoria!
