What is the Ankh?

The ankh, also called "anj", "ank" or simply "Egyptian cross", is the symbol "☥": an Egyptian hieroglyph meaning "life". Hence, it is also called "key of life". It is a symbol widely used in the iconography of the civilization of the pharaohs. It is also called too "anchored cross", because it is a cross with the upper part in the shape of a goose or handle, and "crux ansata" in Latin.

Within Egyptian culture, the Ankh symbol was often used as an amulet. The amulets were associated with the attributes of the god or virtue that represented, in this case, life. It is very common to see it in paintings where a god gives life (mortal and immortal) to a pharaoh by handing over an ankh.

The Ankh is also related to the goddess Isis and her husband, the god Osiris, who was killed by his brother Set, and was finally resurrected thanks to his wife and he became the king of the Afterlife.

Finally, surely names like Tutankhamun sound familiar to you: note that it contains an "ankh" inside, because it means "Tut-Ankh-Amun" (living image of the god Amun). Another example of a pharaoh who carried an ankh in his name is Tut-Ankh-Aten (living image of Aten).
