What is Om?

Om is a syllable and a sound, and one of the most sacred mantras in dharmic religions, such as Hinduism and Buddhism. According to the myth, it symbolizes the divine Brahman and the entire universe: it is the first sound, the first vibration, which originates everything and which in turn describes the supreme deity. The Om is everything that has been, everything that is and everything that will be.

Hence, it is the mantra, or vibration, that is traditionally chanted at the beginning and end of yoga sessions. In addition to its symbolism, the vibration of the Om mantra generates peace of mind and a meditative state in people that helps combat symptoms of anxiety, stress or frustration. It is pronounced AUM and is usually sung with eyes closed and hands together in front of the chest or on the knees, with the chin slightly lowered, as a sign of dedication to the practice and of humility before the teaching of yoga.
