When Sant Jordi approaches, The MeriTomasa's Treasures Factory turns into a polar factory like the one that Santa Claus hides in the most remote and icy regions of the Arctic Ocean or the Willy Bonka Chocolate Factory. With two important differences: here there are no gnomes to do my work for me (MeriTomasa is a one-woman micro-micro-company) and the sterling silver roses that I make are the result of a semi-magical process that I will tell you now.
Semi-magical manufacturing process of the Sant Jordi roses
Sant Jordi roses modeling in wax
According to the farmer's calendar, Sant Jordi roses in sterling silver must be cultivated as follows:
- You have to carefully saw pieces of wax, to go well towards Saint Steve, just after harvesting the lemons. Here you will find a video tutorial to saw pieces of wax to make roses of Sant Jordi in sterling silver.
- With the wax pieces, we model the future roses one by one, with modeling tips (it is forbidden to buy them: each jeweler must make their own), a saw, files and emery paper. Ideally, this work should be done between The Three Kings and La Candelaria (at the beginning of April: Virgin patron of the waxers and electricians).
- Roses modeled in wax must be planted in pots and allowed to grow for two months. Sometimes the Virgin of Montserrat performs a miracle and the wax turns to silver. If not, by Saint Joseph you have to take them to the foundry, which uses magical procedures to make this transmigration.
- Then come the finishes, always starting on Resurrection Sunday: matching (the earrings), finishing (darkening the silver on the back and on the bottoms in contrast to the polishing of the upper front) and mounting.
- When Sant Jordi arrives, we go to the Passeig Pere III market in Manresa, with a long artisan tradition, to sell this year's harvest.
Sant Jordi Roses Collection
Saint George Roses is the MeriTomasa collection for April 23, the day of the rose and the book in Catalonia. It is made up of rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets with a shared motif: a rose modeled in sterling silver, with darkened recesses. Zero kilometer limited series and modeled in wax:
Sant Jordi Roses Ring: adjustable rings available in 3 sizes: small rose (6mm), medium (10mm) or large (16mm).
Sant Jordi Roses Earrings: with snap closure and available in small (6mm) or medium (10mm).
Sant Jordi Roses Necklace: with 45cm silver chain, with a ring to shorten to 42cm, and available in 3 sizes: small rose (6mm), medium (10mm) or large (16mm)).
Sant Jordi Roses Needle: Barley needle, Sant Jordi rose and spike: all in sterling silver. Length 60-70mm.
Sant Jordi Roses Polyester Bracelet: with polyester cord with adjustable length thanks to the macramé knots. 10mm rose.
Sant Jordi Roses Bracelet: rigid bracelet in darkened silver. 10mm rose.
Sterling silver with darkened recesses and wax cast: No two are alike!
The Sant Jordi Roses collection consists of a set of sterling silver treasures (earrings, rings, bracelets, necklaces and needles) that share the rose as a motif and are made from the contrast of the polished finish and the darkened finish of silver, which intensifies the three-dimensional modeling of each piece and gives it more depth.
It is a collection designed and modeled in my workshop in Manresa, based on the manual wax modeling of each piece, so that you can also boast of wearing a zero kilometer jewel of handcrafted manufacturing.
The legend of Sant Jordi and the Dragon (and the politically correct version)
The Catalan version of the legend of Saint George says that after a fierce combat between the knight and the dragon, the beast fell pierced by sharp iron and that from the dripping of blood that watered the earth, a rose bush was born that blossomed profusely every April. In my blog I present an alternative version: the politically correct version of the legend of Saint George and the Dragon, with sensitivity against the absolutist power of kings, animal abuse, the objectification of women, the guillotination of flowers (which are also living beings) and the unjust obligation that hipsters must wear beards :-)
Where can I buy the roses from Sant Jordi by MeriTomasa?
You will find my Sant Jordi Roses collection in the MeriTomasa's mobile store in the Passeig Pere III in Manresa, every April 23, and you can also buy them right now on the Internet, if you are afraid of arriving and that they are already finished, or if you want to receive them earlier at home, or if you want that any day it can be Sant Jordi.
And you, do you already have your rose of Sant Jordi?
En qué trozo del paseo estarás, Meri?
Hola Santi! Estaré en el stand del Somiatruites. El año pasado estábamos delante del Casino. El rollito es "el primer que arriba, el primer que posa parada", de manera que publicaré localización en Facebook, Twitter y Instagram el mismo día 23. Besos!
