About the Seal of Solomon

The Seal of Solomon (Arabic: خاتم سليمان Khātam Sulaymān) is the signet ring attributed to King Solomon in the medieval Arab tradition, from which it was developed in Islamic and Jewish mysticism and occultism in oocident. It is the predecessor of the Star of David, which became the symbol of the Jewish people much later in modern times. The name "seal of Solomon" was given to the hexagram engraved on the bottom of drinking cups in the Arab tradition. For example, in Arabian Nights (chapter 20), Sindbad offers Harun al-Rashid such a cup, on which is engraved the "Table of Solomon".

A power ring in sterling silver. According to legend, it gave Solomon the power to command demons, jinn, and spirits, and to speak with animals. Due to Solomon's proverbial wisdom, his seal became an amulet or talisman in medieval and Renaissance magic, occult and alchemy.

The legend of the Seal of Solomon was developed mainly by medieval Arab writers, who related that the ring was engraved by God and was given to the king directly from heaven. In one tale, a demon, Asmodeus or Sakhr, gained possession of the ring and ruled in Solomon's place for forty days. In a variant on Herodotus's Polycrates ring tale, the demon eventually threw the ring into the sea, where it was swallowed by a fish, caught by a fisherman, and served to Solomon.

Hexagrams feature prominently in Jewish esoteric literature since the early medieval period, and some authors have hypothesized that the Seal of Solomon tradition possibly predates Islam and dates back to the esoteric tradition early rabbinical, or early alchemy in 3rd century Hellenistic Judaism in Egypt, but there are no sources to support this and most scholars assume that the symbol entered the Kabbalistic tradition of medieval Spain from Arabic literature.

The two overlapping or intertwined triangles of Solomon's star are a metaphor for a verse from the Song of Songs, attributed to King Solomon himself, which expresses the intimate relationship between God and men: «I belong to my beloved, and my beloved it's mine». That is why one of the triangles points upwards and the other downwards, since the relationship represents the union between heaven and earth, the divine and the human, good and evil, day and night, and all opposites. Ultimately, the star of Solomon evokes and simultaneously reinforces the covenant sealed between God and Abraham and the balance of opposites.
